The resource-saving substrate refers to the use of mushroom dreg instead of peat as the main raw material of substrate, which realizes the secondary utilization of agricultural waste, saves peat resources, and effectively reduces the cost of growing seedling and cultivation substrate. The substrate was developed by Institute of Vegetables and Medicinal Herbs during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, and named as "resource-saving substrate ".

The substrate has outstanding advantages of utilizing local materials, low cost, environmental protection, high and strong seedling rate, excellent application effect and high market share. In 2018, the project "the research and development on resource-saving vegetable seedling substrate and demonstration and promotion of intensive seedling integrated technology ", with this substrate as the core , was awarded the Cooperation Award of agricultural technology extension of Hebei Province. The substrate was also listed as one of the "top ten technologies for green development of vegetables in Hebei Province" by Agriculture Department of Hebei Province. We have established jointly the substrate brand of "Ji Nongyou" with the achievement transformation unit “Shijiazhuang Nongyou Biotechnology Co., Ltd.”. Since 2014, we had established 24 core demonstration bases, more than 400,000 bags of substrate have been sold every year, and the cumulative radiation promotion area was 120,000 hectares. The substrate was applied to 13 provinces including Hebei, Henan, Gansu, Hubei, Guizhou, Shanxi, Fujian, Hunan, Sichuan,Yunnan,Qinghai,Jiangxi,Hainan.
